Spöring was then nominated as a candidate by the WBL and elected mayor on April 25, 2014 with 59.7 percent of the vote. Spöring took office on November 1, 2014 and took it over with a budget deficit.

On January 1, 2020, the municipalities of Walsrode and Bomlitz merged, so there were early mayoral elections. In the election on March 8, 2020, Spöring was re-elected as a single applicant with 84.16 percent of the vote.
