Helmut Bätz

Helmut Bätz (born March 14, 1923 ): a former German football player. In 1950 and 1951 he played several games for Gera in the highest East German soccer league.

Athletic career

When in 1949 the East German Sports Committee established the so-called East Zone League, later known as the GDR Oberliga , as the highest soccer division, the company sports association (BSG) Gera Süd was one of the 14 founding members . In the first league season 1949/50, the 26-year-old Helmut Bätz was one of the players in Gera. In the season of 26 encounters , the attacking player from Zwötzen only made his first appearance on the 19th match day. In the game Meeraner SV - Gera Süd (4: 1) he was called up as a half-left striker. By the end of the season, four more appearances as an attacker followed, in which he was twice successful as a goalscorer. In 1950/51 the Geraer BSG started as Motor Gera in the top division now known as the DS-Oberliga. Helmut Bätz was also back in the squad, but was only used on the 20th and 35th (a total of 36 match days) as a midfielder or striker. Then Helmut Bätz ended his career as an active player in higher-class football. He later worked as a soccer coach at TSG Gera Zwötzen. In 1972 he helped TSG move up to the third-class district league .
