Helmut Bester

Helmut Bester (born March 13, 1953 in Bonn ) is a German economist . From 1995 to 2020 he was Professor of Microeconomics at the Free University of Berlin .

Life

Best studied at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University of Bonn economics and obtained a diploma in 1979. From 1979 to 1988 he was an assistant there. In 1981 he obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science . In 1984 he was awarded a Dr. rer. pole. PhD. From 1984 to 1985 he was a visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego . In 1987 he completed his habilitation in economics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. From 1988 to 1990 he received the Heisenberg grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) . In 1989 was Best Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) . From 1990 to 1995 he was Professor at the University of Tilburg and from February 1995 to March 2020 Professor of Microeconomics at the Free University of Berlin. From April 2003 to March 2005 he was Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the Free University of Berlin.

In the 2011 Handelsblatt ranking of the best economists, Bester took 14th place in the life's work ranking (top 250 researchers, measured by publications since the start of his career) (22nd place in 2019).

Bester is married. His main research interests include contract theory , information economics and industrial economics .
