Helmut Gorka (born April 13, 1960 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a former soccer player and current coach . He was mostly used in the position of central defender , but also played in midfield.
Career
youth
In his youth, Gorka played for his hometown club FC Schalke 04 , with whose A junior team he was German champion in 1975/76 .
professional
After he could not prevail in the first team of Schalke, Gorka moved to the 2nd Bundesliga to Westfalia Herne . He made his debut on the 1st matchday of the 1978/79 season in a 4-0 home win against Arminia Hannover. His first and only second division goal for Westfalia he scored two game days later as a substitute to make it 2: 3 in a home defeat against VfL Osnabrück . In the 1979/80 season , Westfalia's license was withdrawn after the first match day and the team was relegated to the Oberliga Westfalen. 1980 Gorka moved back to the 2nd Bundesliga at Prussia Münster . In the 1980/81 season he scored 2 goals in 36 missions, but could not prevent his relegation with Prussia to the Oberliga Westfalen. In 1982 he went to Rot-Weiss Essen . In 62 second division games Gorka scored 4 goals before signing a contract with league rivals Rot-Weiß Oberhausen in 1984 . For Oberhausen he ran for the first time on the 3rd match day in a 3-1 home win against Alemannia Aachen and scored his first goal for his new club two game days later against SSV Ulm 1846 . He also scored Gorka's only goal in the DFB Cup in the Red-White jersey, in the first round in 1987/88 against Preußen Münster. That's where he went after four seasons with 119 second division games and ten goals for Oberhausen in 1988. For the third-class Münsteraner he ran 21 times and scored one goal. His last club station as a player was SpVg Marl . In his last season 1990/91 Gorka played 14 times, his last appearance was a substitution on the 18th matchday against SC Verl . In the summer of 1991, Gorka ended his active career.
He made a total of 242 second division games (17 goals), 35 league games (1 goal) and 5 appearances in the DFB Cup .
