Helmut Haenel

Helmut Haenel (born April 24, 1919 in Berlin ; † September 22, 1993 in Bergholz-Rehbrücke ) was a German veterinarian , microbiologist and nutritionist . He worked from 1964 to 1981 and from 1990 to 1991 as director of the Central Institute for Nutrition in Bergholz-Rehbrücke , which, as a non-university institute, belonged to the research community of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and was the forerunner of the German Institute for Nutritional Research .

Life

Helmut Haenel studied veterinary medicine at the Justus Liebig Academy in Gießen , where he also received his doctorate in 1953 on a microbiological topic . A year earlier, he became head of the microbiology department at the Institute for Nutrition in Bergholz-Rehbrücke near Potsdam . From 1957 the institute belonged as an academy institute to the research community of the German Academy of Sciences, later the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW), and in 1969 it was transformed into the Central Institute for Nutrition of the AdW.

In 1959 Helmut Haenel received his habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1964 he was managing director of the Institute for Nutrition, and one year later he was appointed professor at the academy. In 1968 he became director of the institute, which he headed until 1981. His successor was Horst Schmandke . After the political change in the GDR , he took over the management of the institute again in 1990, which he led until its dissolution at the end of 1991 and the re-establishment of the German Institute for Nutritional Research .

Scientific work

Helmut Haenel's research focused on the microecology of the digestive tract and the investigation of the interactions between the intestinal flora and the entire organism. In addition, he dealt with the health effects of nutrition as well as historical aspects of diet, and worked for a time as editor of the "Journal of Nutritional Science".

Awards

From 1969, Helmut Haenel was a full member of the German Academy of Sciences and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1984 he received the National Prize of the GDR III. Class for science and technology as well as the 1991 Federation of European Nutrition Sciences Award. The German Nutrition Society made him an honorary member in 1992 and has been awarding the Helmut Haenel Prize in memory of him since 1999.
