Horst Schmandke

Horst Schmandke (born March  7, 1935 in Pampow ) is a German chemist and nutritionist . From 1982 to 1990 he acted as director of the Central Institute for Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbrücke , a non-university research institute of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

Life

Horst Schmandke was born in Pampow in 1935 and from 1954 studied chemistry at the University of Rostock , where he also received his doctorate in 1962 . From 1962 to 1970 he worked as head of the “Biochemistry of Nutrients” department at the Institute for Nutrition of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin, which later became the Central Institute for Nutrition of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW). During this time he received his habilitation in 1966 at the University of Leipzig . From 1968 to 1970 he was head of the vitamin department at the Institute for Food Chemistry in Havana .

After his return he worked again at the Central Institute for Nutrition, where he was head of the food chemistry department until 1991. After he was appointed professor by the AdW in 1974, he succeeded Helmut Haenel as director of the central institute from 1982 to 1990. After the political change in the German Democratic Republic , Helmut Haenel took over the management of the institute again in 1990 until it was re-established as the German Institute for Nutritional Research .

From 1989 Horst Schmandke was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR.
