Helmut Hunger (born January 31, 1940 ) is a former German soccer player who played for Vorwärts Neubrandenburg in the GDR league from 1962 to 1970 .

Athletic career

After the 21-year-old striker Helmut Hunger last played in 1960 with the army sports club Vorwärts in the Eggesin-Karpin district in the fourth-class district league Neubrandenburg , he moved to the army sports club Vorwärts Neubrandenburg in the second-class GDR league in the 1961/62 season . There Hunger immediately became a regular player, played 30 of the 39 league games (changeover from the calendar year to the summer-spring season) and became the ASK's second top scorer with nine goals. In July 1962, the Army Sports Club was converted into an Army Sports Association (ASG). Hunger scored ten goals in the GDR league in 1962/63, but only made fourteen appearances in the 26 league games. Also in the next two seasons he did not get past fourteen or eleven missions in the now 30 games of the season, his scoring with two goals each was also below his possibilities. It was only from the 1965/66 season until 1969 that Hunger played in the regular team and became the top scorer in his team in 1967 and 1968 with ten and twelve goals respectively. 1969/70 was Hunger's last GDR league season. He played only 17 out of 30 league games and only scored two goals. At the end of the season Vorwärts Neubrandenburg had to relegate from the GDR league and, like Helmut Hunger, did not return to higher-class football. Hunger had played 199 games in the GDR league and scored 59 goals. He later became team leader of the ASG.
