The villages in the Upper Mátra were isolated and hardly known. Tourism only developed with the separation of the greater part of the Western Carpathians from the Hungarian territory through the Trianon Peace Treaty . Many hotels and sanatoriums were built in the 1930s.
On the 900th anniversary of the death of King Stephen the Holy in the summer of 1938, the villages of Ötházhuta were renamed Mátraszentimre, Fiskalitáshuta to Mátraszentlászló and Óhuta to Mátraszentistván as part of a public festival . In 1944 the previously independent communities united. In 1948 Galyatető was also incorporated.
In the 1950s, the Piszkéstető observatory was built in the Mátraszentimre district .
