Gyöngyöstarján [ ɟønɟøʃtɒrjaːn ] is a Hungarian community in the county Gyöngyös in Heves county .
Geographical location
Gyöngyöstarján is located in northern Hungary , on the southern edge of the Mátra Mountains , six kilometers northeast of the district town of Gyöngyös , on the Tárján-patak river.
history
The first written mention of Gyöngyöstarján comes from the year 1275. At that time the area was owned by György Tarján from the Aba family , from which the Hungarian King Sámuel Aba also comes. The name of the settlement is most likely derived from György Tarján. In 1383 the area came into the possession of the Széchenyi family. Around 1650 the owner changed again, this time the Haller family became the owner of Tarján and the surrounding area and stayed there until the 18th century. The most famous building in the village, the Haller wine cellar, was also built during this period. At the end of construction, the cellar was approx. 170 m long, but has since been expanded to 540 m. This makes it one of the longest wine cellars in Europe. The baroque parish church was built between 1747 and 1753 from the stones that were exposed during the construction of the Heller wine cellar .
