Gyöngyöspata is a municipality on the southern edge of the Mátra in northern Hungary .

history

The area was already inhabited before the Hungarian conquest. Graves from the time of the Avars and the Hungarian conquest were found. A castle was built in the 10th century. Church life was directed from 40 settlements from the church, which was built in 1010. The castle was besieged and conquered by Czech Hussites in 1460 . King Matthias Corvinus ' first successful battle took place here. In the 15th century the place got market rights and was after Eger and Gyöngyös the third largest settlement in Heves county.

21st century

In March / April 2011, the presence of uniformed right-wing extremists (Szebb Jövőért Polgárőr Egyesület) in the community caused an international stir, terrorizing the Roma population for weeks on behalf of the mayor and in front of the state executive . The Hungarian Red Cross was able to save around 300 women and children from the neo-Nazis and take them out of town and to safety by bus.

In September 2019, the municipality was sentenced to pay compensation because Roma children there were discriminated against between 2004 and 2017, for example they were not allowed to take part in swimming or computer lessons or on excursions. The verdict was upheld by the Kúria, Hungary's highest court, on May 12, 2020. The right-wing populist Prime Minister Orbán condemned this court decision as "deeply unfair". His ruling party Fidesz announced a nationwide survey of the population on the court ruling, which was postponed because of the corona crisis. Critics fear that such a survey could further curtail the independence of the judiciary and fuel prejudice against the Roma population.

In 2020, almost 90 percent of the students in the community school were Roma, although there are only a good 400 Roma out of almost 3,000 inhabitants, because non-Roma parents often enroll their children in schools in other places in order to inform them about the conflicts at the school in Gyöngyöspata and to spare them.
