Helmut Jungwirth (* 1969 in Graz ) is an Austrian molecular biologist and lecturer at the University of Graz . Since November 2015 he has been a member of the science cabaret group Science Busters . In October 2016 he was appointed Austria's first professor for science communication .

Life

Helmut Jungwirth studied molecular microbiology at the University of Graz from 1987 . He completed his studies in 1996 with a diploma thesis on the subject of investigations into the resistance of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae DM12 strain to the antibiotic diazaborine . In 2001 he received his doctorate at the Institute for Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology of the University of Graz with a dissertation on the influence of the YAP1 gene of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae on resistance to the active ingredient diazaborine . He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Graz. In 2003 he received an Erwin Schrödinger scholarship from the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF) and worked in the working group of aging researcher Frank Madeo at the Physiological Chemistry Institute of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 2005 he conducted research at the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Medical University of Vienna . In 2009 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the subject of unraveling detoxification pathways .

In 2008 he was entrusted with the task of establishing the area of ​​science communication at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz . In 2008 the Open Laboratory Graz was founded. In the meantime, four more hands-on laboratories have been set up with the taste laboratory, the open-air laboratory, the medieval laboratory and the physics laboratory. Since 2011, Helmut Jungwirth has also been the managing director of the Center for Society, Knowledge and Communication (also known as The 7th Faculty ) at the University of Graz and was involved in the development of various event formats (e.g. Politics Café, Thirst for Knowledge, Botany Brunch, Brain Game, science with taste, the moving body etc.) involved. In 2010 Jungwirth was appointed associate professor at the Institute for Molecular Biosciences and in October 2016 he was appointed Austria's first professor for science communication, with the aim of establishing a corresponding branch of study. Together with the journalist Elisabeth Holzer, he developed a three-semester, part-time communications college at the University of Graz.

In November 2015 he was invited to a guest appearance by the Science Busters and has been a permanent member of the science cabaret group ever since. In October 2016 he celebrated the premiere with the program Bierstern, I greet you .
