Helmut Kleiner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Helmut Kleiner (born November 24, 1902 in Magdeburg , † July 2, 1987 in Cologne ) was a German chemist .

He had worked for IG Farbenindustrie AG from 1929 and later for Bayer AG in Leverkusen. In 1930 he succeeded in inventing nitrile rubber (Buna N).

Life

Helmut Kleiner was the son of the chief railway engineer Otto Kleiner and his wife Hedwig, b. Dorff. After finishing school in Magdeburg, he studied chemistry from 1921 to 1927 at the Universities of Göttingen and Marburg . During his studies he became a member of the Alemannia Göttingen fraternity in 1921 . In Marburg he was in April 1927 as an academic student of Karl von Auwers with the work "Investigations in the Indazolreihe" doctorate . He then worked as a Liebig assistant in the chemical institute at the University of Marburg. A joint publication with the later Nobel Prize winner Karl Ziegler on the alkali polymerisation of unsaturated hydrocarbons originates from this phase of life .

Grave in Melaten cemetery

On April 1, 1929, Kleiner joined the rubber laboratory of the IG Farbenindustrie in Leverkusen. It was here in February 1930 that he first produced nitrile rubber (NBR), which was also known as Buna N. However, the patent applied for on the basis of his invention in April 1930 does not name him as the inventor. Instead, his superiors Erich Konrad and the department head of the scientific laboratory of the A-Fabrik, Eduard Tschunkur , are named. In the autumn of 1934 Helmut Kleiner moved to the azo department of the main laboratory in Leverkusen. Among other things, he was involved in the development of the first isocyanate- based adhesive . After the IG Farbenindustrie was dissolved, Helmut Kleiner worked for Bayer AG in Leverkusen until he retired on January 1, 1968.

Kleiner was buried in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. L).
