Helmut Norpoth

Helmut Norpoth (* 1943 in Essen ) is an American political scientist .

Life

Helmut Norpoth studied at the Free University of Berlin until 1966 and then at the University of Michigan , which he graduated with a Masters in 1967. He then received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1976. He then taught at the University of Cologne and the University of Texas . From 1979 he worked at Stony Brook University , where he was appointed assistant professor in 1980 and a full professorship in 1985. Norpoth teaches and researches at Stony Brook University .

Among other things, he deals with election predictions. He developed the "Primary Model", which is based on data from presidential elections from 1912 onwards. The model gained a certain prominence in connection with the presidential election in the United States in 2016 , as he predicted an election victory for Donald Trump based on this model .
