Location of Fernthal in Rhineland-Palatinate

Fernthal is part of the Neustadt (Wied) local community , Asbach community in the Neuwied district in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate . With currently around 500 inhabitants, it is the second largest district of the municipality after the core town of Neustadt, which is about 4 kilometers to the north.

Fernthal is located in the Rhine-Westerwald nature park and right on the border with the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district , the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is geographically 8 kilometers away. The district town of Neuwied can be reached in 26 kilometers via the L255, the nearest major city Bonn via the Autobahn 3 in 38 kilometers.

Culture and sights

In Fernthal there is the Catholic Chapel of St. Maria Mater Dolorosa , built between 1911 and 1912 , a five-axis romanised quarry stone hall in which Holy Mass is still regularly held.

Federal motorway 3

The place is located along the federal motorway 3 and has the Neustadt (Wied) junction , which is located between the Bad Honnef / Linz and Neuwied junction . In addition, the serviced Fernthal West service station can be reached via the A3 , which contains a Serways branch and, with Burger King, also a fast food restaurant . Remote control tunnel

The Fernthal tunnel , part of the high-speed line Cologne – Rhine / Main, was named after the town of Fernthal . It was built between 1999 and 2001 and went into operation in April 2002. A structural challenge was the crossing under a garbage dump through the 1555 meter long tunnel. In March 2000, the railway tunnel served as a backdrop for the TV series The Clown during construction .
