Helmut Pabst (born April 29, 1951 in Bochum ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper and coach .

career

Helmut Pabst began his career at STV Werne when he was seven. As a C-youth he moved to SpVg Marl and was twice appointed to the Recklinger district selection. Ultimately, he moved up in 1969 in the Verbandsligaelf. Due to his good performance in this league, he received an invitation from FC Schalke 04 President Günter Siebert for a trial training session. Pabst was able to convince and then signed a two-year contract before the 1971/72 season as number two behind Norbert Nigbur .

On the last day of the season, Schalke played at Bayern Munich , where the Olympic Stadium was also used for the first time in the Bundesliga. In addition, it was the first Bundesliga game to be broadcast live on television. Schalke would have won the championship with a win over Bayern. The emergency occurred in the 67th minute. Nigbur sustained a knee injury and Pabst made his Bundesliga debut. However, it was already 1: 3 and Pabst had to reach behind him twice more. After this game he was able to raise his hopes that he would also play in the DFB Cup final against 1. FC Kaiserslautern . However, Nigbur reported back in time and Pabst only had the bank. He had to sit on this for the entire next season.

He only guarded the gate for the Schalke, which had been decimated after the Bundesliga scandal, after Nigbur's meniscus operation before the 1974/75 season . In the 3-0 defeat against VfB Stuttgart he was not to blame and in the second game against VfL Bochum Pabst became a hero. The "kicker" even voted him into the "eleven of the day". In the next three games, he conceded a total of ten goals and showed blatant weaknesses in the control of the penalty area , especially in the 5-5 draw against FC Bayern Munich . In his last Bundesliga game against Wuppertaler SV , he secured another two points for his team with great reactions.

After this season he was in the 2. Bundesliga for Wacker 04 Berlin , SC Fortuna Cologne and SG Union Solingen in goal. He made 278 second division appearances in ten years.

Pabst ended his active career at VfB Langenfeld , for which he then worked as a goalkeeping coach. This was followed by an engagement in this function in Remscheid, before he returned to work in January 2002 for his former club, which was newly founded as 1. FC Union Solingen . After several years as a goalkeeper coach of various youth teams of the 1st Spvg. Solingen-Wald 03 , Pabst has been co-trainer of the senior team of the club since 2017.
