Helmut Schürer (born May 13, 1920 in Pöhlau ; † May 30, 2005 ibid) was a German painter and popular artist .

Life

Schürer completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter and after his return from captivity in 1950 he became a company painter for Martin Hoop III. In 1953 he founded the painting and drawing circle of the hard coal works "Martin Hoop" , which he led into old age. In 1964 Schürer founded the children's painting and drawing circle at the Pöhlau and Auerbach elementary schools , which he also directed. In 1968 he helped organize the Zwickau development studio . In 1972 he was appointed to the preparatory committee for the VII Art Exhibition of the GDR . Schürer put his concern in the words: "For future generations it is [...] important that, in addition to the technical and economic documentation, the artistic impression of the 650-year coal era in Zwickau is left behind."

Works

Schürer created watercolors, oil paintings, pen drawings and woodcuts that dealt with the everyday work of the Zwickau miners , the everyday life of the population and his homeland.

Schürer exhibited internationally with the painting and drawing circle, including in Sweden, Finland and Hungary. He co-designed several exhibitions, for example the 1990 special exhibition "Glückauf Zwickau" in the Zwickau House of History. In 2004 he was honored with a solo exhibition of his life's work in Zwickau.

Even after his death, Schürer's works continued to be exhibited, for example in 2010 as part of the “Art and Coal” exhibition in the Zwickau Municipal Art Collection.

Among other things, Schürer illustrated Günter Behnert's “Schachtziegen” books .

Honors

In 1957 Schürer was awarded the State Prize of the Council of Ministers of the GDR for artistic folk creation, 2nd class. Other honors were the FDGB art prize and a gold medal at the 12th Workers' Festival.
