Helmut Schirmer

Helmut Schirmer (* 1940 in Berlin ) is a German legal scholar and former professor at the Free University of Berlin .

Live and act

Schirmer studied law at the universities of Berlin , Innsbruck , Hamburg and Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1962 he passed his first state examination in law in Berlin. In 1966, he was from the Free University of Berlin with that of Karl victory supervised insurance law work "The power of representation of the liability insurer in liability ratio" Dr. iur. PhD. After his legal clerkship, he also passed his second state examination in 1968 in Berlin. In 1972 Schirmer completed his habilitation in Berlin with the unpublished work "The late return of the rental property by the tenant - considerations on the termination and processing of tenancies" and in the same year took up a full professorship for civil law and insurance law at the Free University of Berlin. Schirmer held this position until he retired in 2007. Most recently he was director at the Institute for Civil Law at the Free University of Berlin.

Since 1988 Schirmer has also been a member of the German Association for Insurance Science and was a member of the Insurance Advisory Board of the Federal Insurance Supervisory Office from 1989 to 2004 and a member of the Commission for the Reform of Insurance Contract Law in Germany from 2000 to 2004 . He has been a partner in an insurance law firm since 2012.

Schirmer's main research areas are insurance law, in particular liability insurance law, insurance contract law and legal protection insurance law. In the area of ​​general civil law, he mainly focuses on general liability law and damage compensation law.
