Karl Sieg (born May 6, 1911 in Berlin ; † March 15, 1998 in Hamburg ) was a German lawyer and university professor .

Karl Sieg was the son of a businessman from Berlin. After graduating from high school in Berlin-Köpenick in 1930 , he studied law at the Humboldt University in Berlin . After passing the state law examination in 1934, he received his doctorate two years later on a topic of constitutional law. He then went to Hamburg, where he worked for an insurance company for financial reasons. Sieg completed a legal clerkship and from 1937 worked as an assistant to the insurance lawyer Hans Möller at the University of Hamburg . During the Second World War he had to do war and military service from 1939 to 1945 and was taken prisoner of war. After passing the second state law examination in 1947, he received his habilitation in 1949 with Hans Möller. His habilitation thesis was entitled “Radiation of Liability Insurance. Historical, substantive and procedural studies on the position of third parties. "

In 1950 he took up a position as a regional judge at the Hamburg judiciary. From 1953 to 1963 he worked as a higher regional judge at the Hanseatic higher regional court . At the same time, Sieg was a private lecturer from 1949 to 1954 and then an adjunct professor at the University of Hamburg until 1963 . He held a position as full professor at the Free University of Berlin from 1963 to 1973. Afterwards he headed the chair for civil, commercial and insurance law of Hans Möller at Hamburg University until his retirement in 1978.

Karl Sieg dealt in particular with questions of insurance law, which were settled in the second half of the 20th century. Civil, commercial and securities law were also among his areas of focus. In addition, he dealt with liability and transport law, procedural law in procedural, foreclosure and insolvency law, social security law and comparative law. He continued to work on the topics of insurance and liability after completing his habilitation thesis. In addition, he dealt with the protection of injured outsiders and dealing with insured and co-insured persons.

Works

From 1980 Karl Sieg published the major insurance commentary on Bruck / Möller / Sieg . He wrote a short textbook that met with wide approval and was published in its third edition in 1994 under the title General Insurance Law . From 1953 until his death, he continued to write important articles for the magazine Versicherungsrecht . During his time as a university lecturer, he supervised several habilitations and dissertations and thus supported numerous students.
