history

Surname

Hemelinger Straße was named after the formerly independent municipality of Hemelingen , in whose direction the road leads. Hemelingen had 7,214 inhabitants in 1905 and has belonged to the municipality of Bremen since 1939.

development

After the establishment of the St.-Jürgen-Straße hospital until 1851, the eastern suburb developed eastwards. The lifting of the gate barrier to Bremen's old town and the legal equality of the suburbanites with the city citizens in the middle of the 19th century made moving to the suburbs more attractive. But it was not until 1951 that parts of the eastern suburb - the Steintor, the Fesenfeld, the Peterswerder and the Hulsberg - formed the new district of the eastern suburb. Between 1870 and 1880 the cross streets of Hamburger Straße were laid out and the existing diagonal path connection to Hemelinger Straße was expanded. In 1909 the elementary school was established; At the request of the residents, in 1988/89 it became the comprehensive school center.

traffic

In 1879 a horse-drawn tram line from Hastedt to Walle was opened and electrified around 1900. In 1908 line numbers 2 and 3 were introduced, which have been preserved to this day.

The Bremen tram touches the street south with line 3 (Gröpelingen - Weserwehr) and north with line 2 (Gröpelingen - Sebaldsbrück) and 10 (Gröpelingen - Hauptbahnhof - Sebaldsbrück)

Buildings and facilities

The street has mostly a three-story development.
