Hemibates stenosoma is a species of African cichlid that is endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa.

features

Hemibates stenosoma is elongated, laterally strongly flattened and can reach a maximum length of 27 cm. In terms of color, the species shows a pronounced sexual dimorphism . The females are uniformly silvery, the males have black spots on a silvery background, arranged in three longitudinal bands, which are particularly clear on the rear part of the body and on the caudal fin. The throat, pelvic fins and anal fin are black. The anal fin shows some egg spots. The eyes are relatively large, the mouth is above.

Way of life

Hemibates stenosoma lives at depths of 5 to 100 meters above muddy ground. It is a mouthbrooder and a voracious, piscivorous predatory fish that can also swallow relatively large prey fish.

Systematics

The species was by the Belgian-British zoologists 1901 George Albert Boulenger as Paratilapia stenosoma described and 1920 by the American ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in the genre Hemibates asked. The generic name Hemibates is made up of the Greek hemi "half" and bates and is intended to make the relationship and similarity to the genus Bathybates clear. The type - epithet stenosoma means "narrow body" ( stenos "narrow, narrow", soma "body"). Until the description of Hemibates koningsi in August 2017, Hemibates stenosoma was the only species in the genus. Together with some other piscivorous cichlids, the genus belongs to the tribe Bathybatini .
