Hendrik Alexander Seyffardt (born November 1, 1872 in Breda , † February 6, 1943 in 's-Gravenhage ) was a Dutch lieutenant general .

Life

Seyffardt was the son of August Lodewijk Willem Seyffardt , Minister of War in the Van Tienhoven cabinet , and of Catharina Louisa de Hollander. On June 28, 1898, Seyffardt married Alida Elisabeth Bervoets. From this marriage a son and two daughters were born.

Seyffardt was enrolled as a cadet at the Royal Military Academy (KMA) in Breda at the age of 15, where he became a lecturer in 1900. In 1928 he became the commander of the 1st division with the rank of major general . From May 1929 to May 1934 Seyffardt was Chief of the General Staff , after which he retired. In 1930 he was promoted to lieutenant general.

He had a strong anti-communist and pro-German attitude. He wrote articles for the weekly newspaper “Volk en Vaderland” of the Nationaal-Socialistische Bewegungsing (NSB). In 1937 he was head of this party for about half a year. At the beginning of July 1941 Seyffardt was nominally "Commander" of a Dutch volunteer legion that took part in the German-Soviet war with the Wehrmacht . Seyffardt never actually took up a command post. His command was more of a figurehead for the Wehrmacht propaganda.

On February 5, 1943, Seyffardt was gunned down in his apartment in Scheveningen by Jan Vereleration (1919–1944) of the Dutch resistance group "CS-6". He succumbed to his injuries a day later.
