Hendrik Fayat (1965)

Hendrik Fayat (born June 28, 1908 in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek , † September 21, 1997 ) was a Belgian socialist politician and 1964 President of the Council of the European Communities .

Fayat completed a law degree at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel , where he obtained a doctorate in law .

From 1946 to 1972 he was a member of the Chamber of Deputies, where he represented the Socialist Party (PSB) in the arrondissement of Brussels .

Between 1957 and 1958, he succeeded Victor Larock as Foreign Trade Minister in Achille Van Acker's cabinet . From 1961 to 1965 he was Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs in Théo Lefèvre's cabinet and thus representative of the then Foreign Minister Paul-Henri Spaak . In this position Fayat was President of the Council of the European Communities in the first half of 1964 . From 1965 to 1966, he was Minister for Foreign Affairs and State Secretary for European Affairs in Pierre Harmel's cabinet .

In 1968 he lost his promising place on the list as a representative of the Flemings . The Flemish-speaking socialists reacted by drawing up their own "Rode Leeuwen" list . For this, Fayat was again elected to the Chamber of Deputies and one year later the leadership of the PSB recognized the “Red Lions” as an association of the BSP for Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde . Between 1968 and 1972 he was first foreign trade minister again and then, after leaving the Chamber of Deputies, he was State Secretary for Foreign Trade and Port Affairs in Gaston Eyskens' cabinet until 1973 .
