Henepola Gunaratana

Henepola Gunaratana (born December 7, 1927 in Henepola , Sri Lanka ) is a Ceylonese , since 1968 living in the USA Buddhist monk of the Theravada tradition.

Life

Henepola Gunaratana was at the age of 12 years in a temple in Malandeniya, a village in the district of Kurunegala on Ceylon ordained as a Buddhist monk; at the age of 20 he received higher ordination in Kandy . He received his further education at Vidyalankara College and the Buddhist Missionary College in Colombo . He spent five years as a missionary in India and then ten years in Malaysia .

In the United States acted Bhante Gunaratana since 1968, first as general secretary since 1980 as President of the Buddhist Vihara Society in Washington, DC In 1973 he was at the city's American University , where he even in philosophy doctorate , religious advisor for Buddhism .

He teaches in the United States as well as Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. His books are published in Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and the USA.

Bhante Mahathera Henepola Gunaratana co-founded the Bhavana Society in 1985and was appointed abbot of their meditation center in the Shenandoah Valley in West Virginia , USA. In 1996 he received the title of President of the Sangha Nayaka Thera for all of North America.

Under his guidance, the Sri Henepola Gunaratana Scholarship Trust was founded in 2005 to support children in need in rural Sri Lanka.
