Hennecke from Riga

Hennecke von Riga (also Hannike, Hans, Hanco, Hanul (o) , * before 1382 ; † between 1417 and 1421 in Kraków ), was a German citizen of Vilnius who was governor for his role in the Lithuanian civil war (1345-1382) and Vogt of Vilnius was appointed.

Life

Henneckes family belonged to the citizenship of the Lithuanian cities Riga and Vilnius .

While the princes Kęstutis and Jogaila were fighting for supremacy in Lithuania, Hennecke opened the gates of the city of Vilnius to the future Polish king Jogaila in 1382. Hennecke became a confidante of Jogaila and of the future Lithuanian regent Skirgaila and appointed governor and governor of Vilnius.

In the following period, Hennecke promoted relations with Poland in order to circumvent the policy of the Teutonic Order, which restricts Lithuanian trade . In 1385 he took part in the founding of the Union of Krewo as Jogaila's chargé d'affaires by asking for the hand of the Hungarian princess Hedwig of Anjou for Jogaila .

In 1387 he resigned his office and gave his land to a Franciscan monastery . In 1393 he moved to Krakow , where he died between 1417 and 1421.
