Henning Bock (art historian)

Henning Bock (born December 1, 1931 ) is a German art historian and former museum director . From 1973 to 1996 he was the director of the Gemäldegalerie of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin.

Live and act

Bock studied art history , philosophy and archeology from 1952 to 1959 . He received his doctorate with a thesis on the English cathedral Gothic of the 14th century . In 1960, he began his professional career as an assistant at the Art History Institute of the University of Bonn . In 1963 he moved to the Kunsthalle Bremen in the same function and stayed there until 1968. From 1968 to 1972 he worked as chief curator in the West Berlin New National Gallery . 1972/1973 he accepted a visiting professorship at New York University . From 1973 to 1996 he was director of the Staatliche Gemäldegalerie Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, and during his tenure he helped to unite the painting collections from the east and west of the city. He has also appeared as a contributor to numerous exhibition catalogs , including as the author of text contributions.

Bock is a member of the Berlin Scientific Society (BWG). He is married to the translator Dietlind Bock-Meinardus. Together they have a son who was born in 1964.
