Henning Läuter (born January 25, 1944 in Großenhain ) is a German mathematician .

Life

The son of a teacher couple attended the Käthe-Kollwitz-Oberschule in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg from 1958 to 1962 . After graduating from high school, he first completed an apprenticeship as an electrical mechanic before studying mathematics at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1963 to 1968 . After completing his studies, he became an aspirant with Rolf Reissig at the Institute for Mathematics and Mechanics at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin . Läuter received his doctorate in 1971 from Olaf Bunke at the Humboldt University with a dissertation on the topic of prediction and estimation in stochastic processes with a linear regression component. In 1976, Läuter completed his habilitation with a thesis on the subject of estimating linear parameters in restricted linear models . In 1980, Läuter became professor at the AdW of the GDR.

Main research areas included in particular

  • Optimization of magnetic tape production at ORWO Wolfen ,
  • Multivariate statistics,
  • Test planning,
  • Smoothing and
  • Classification procedure.

In 1994 Läuter was appointed full professor for stochastics at the University of Potsdam . In the Mathematical Institute there, he headed the Chair of Mathematical Statistics until his retirement in 2009.

Läuter was married to the mathematician Elisabeth Läuter , with whom he has two sons, Martin Läuter (* 1969) and Matthias Läuter (* 1975). Both sons are mathematicians. Jürgen Läuter is a brother of Henning Läuter and also a mathematician.

Honors

In 1990 Läuter received the Leonhard Euler Medal from the GDR Academy of Sciences for his fundamental research in the field of mathematical statistics.
