Olaf Bunke (born May 6, 1935 in Berlin ) is a German mathematician , statistician and former university professor .

Life

Bunke's parents emigrated from Nazi Germany to Argentina in 1935 after his birth , where Bunke grew up with his two years younger sister Tamara . In 1952 the family returned to Germany and moved to East Berlin . After high school in 1954 graduated Bunke at the Humboldt University (HU) Berlin Mathematics and in 1960 with the work "New confidence intervals for the parameters of the binomial " at Erna Weber doctorate .

In 1966 Bunke received his habilitation at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena , became a professor with a teaching assignment in 1967 and was full professor of mathematics and mathematical statistics at the HU Berlin from 1969 to 2003 . Bunke was also the director of the departments “Mathematical Methods in Economics , Technology and Planning”, “ Operations Research ” and “ Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics” of the Mathematics Section at HU Berlin.

From 1964 to 1970 Bunke was also head of department at the "Institute for Pure Mathematics" of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW), which later became the Central Institute for Mathematics and Mechanics of the AdW. In 1969 he was the founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Mathematische Operationsforschung und Statistik , which was incorporated into the journal Statistics: A Journal of Theoretical and Applied Statistics from 1976 .

Bunke was a corresponding member of the GDR Academy of Sciences from 1970 and a full member from 1976 . He was temporarily married to Helga Königsdorf , retired in 2003 and now lives in Berlin. The mathematician Ulrich Bunke is his son.
