Jürgen Läuter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen Läuter (born August 5, 1935 in Leipzig ) is a German mathematician and professor emeritus at the University of Magdeburg .

Life

Läuter grew up in Leipzig and studied mathematics at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1953 to 1958 . He did his doctorate in 1973 under Manfred Peschel with a thesis on the computer implementation of statistical algorithms. From 1980 to 1990 he headed a working group at the Karl Weierstrass Institute for Mathematics .

From 1990 until his retirement in 2000 he was Professor of Biometry and Director of the Institute for Biometry and Medical Informatics at the University of Magdeburg .

His brother Henning Läuter (* 1944) is a professor emeritus of mathematics (Faculty of Mathematics, Chair of Mathematical Statistics, University of Potsdam ).

Act

Läuter's research area is multivariate statistics . Together with Heinz Ahrens , he wrote the standard textbook “Multidimensional Analysis of Variance” in 1974, which was very popular both in the GDR and throughout the Eastern Bloc. In later years he investigated methods for stabilizing multivariate processes, for example by reducing dimensions (Läuter 1992).

Another area of activity of Läuter was the development of software for statistical analysis. The language DIST (data - interpretation - structuring - transformation, Läuter 1981) was a forerunner of modern statistical programming languages.

From 1996 to 1999, Läuter was editor of the Biometrical Journal . Since 2007 he has been an honorary member of the German Region of the International Biometric Society . In addition, Läuter was awarded the DAGStat medal of the German Statistics Working Group in 2016 for his work.
