Life

Béghin studied from 1894 to 1897 at the École normal supérieure (in the same year as Paul Montel , Henri Lebesgue , Paul Langevin ) with the degree of Agrégation and was then professor in Brest at the Naval School. In 1922 he received his doctorate and was then a lecturer (maitre de conférences) in Montpellier. In 1924 he was appointed professor of mechanics at the University of Lille, succeeding Albert Châtelet, and professor of analysis in the following year, succeeding Jean Chazy . In 1929 he became maitre de conférences and then professor at the Sorbonne (as successor to Gabriel Koenigs ). Soon afterwards he was also a tutor and from 1941 professor of mechanics at the École polytechnique . In 1947 he retired from the Sorbonne and the Ecole Polytechnique.

He did not only deal theoretically with mechanics, but also developed a gyro compass, among other things. He worked on the French edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences . In 1946 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences .

The mountaineer Pierre Béghin (1951–1992) is his grandson.
