Henri Béraud

Henri Béraud (born September 21, 1885 in Nîmes , † October 24, 1958 in Saint-Clément-des-Baleines ) was a French writer and journalist. In 1922 he received the Prix Goncourt for the novels Le vitriol de la lune and Le martyre de l'obèse (Martyrdom of an obese ).

Béraud was the son of a baker in Lyon. From 1903 he worked as a journalist and from 1917 was at the satirical weekly Le canard enchaîné and he wrote for the magazine La Crapouillot. In 1925 he visited the Soviet Union and was disaffected by the dictatorship ruling there (previously he had been left-leaning). After he campaigned for the right in the riots on February 6, 1934, it broke with Le Canard enchaîné. He also worked as a foreign reporter for Petit Parisien and Paris Soir and wrote for the magazine Le Merle Blanc and from 1928 to 1943 for the right-wing weekly Gringoire (which he came to through his friend Joseph Kessel ). In 1936 he was instrumental in the smear campaign against Interior Minister Roger Salengro , which drove him to suicide. In particular, he was hostile to England and anti-Semitic and supported the Vichy regime during the war. As a collaborator, he was sentenced to death in 1945, but was pardoned by de Gaulle to life imprisonment after writers such as François Mauriac intervened. In 1950 he was released for health reasons. He died at his home on the Ile de Ré .

In addition to novels, he published reportage books.
