Henri Bacry (born October 29, 1928 in Algiers , † June 9, 2010 in Paris ) was a French mathematical and theoretical physicist.

Life

Bacry received his doctorate in Algiers in 1962 at the Faculté des Sciences there (forerunner of the university), where he was an assistant. He became a mathematics teacher at the Lycée Bugeaud in Algiers and in 1969 a professor at the Faculté des Sciences in Marseille. In 1964/65 Bacry was a visiting scientist at CERN . In 1966/67 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . He was a professor at the University of Aix-Marseille (Université de la Méditeranée) at the Center for Theoretical Physics of the University and the CNRS .

He dealt with theoretical elementary particle physics, in particular with the application of group theoretical methods (such as the representation theory of the Poincaré group ), but also with optics, solid state physics and statistical mechanics. He also wrote a book on group theory in geometry.

In 1972 he founded the International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics.
