Henri Antoine Gillet (born July 8, 1953 in Tangier ) is a mathematician teaching in Chicago who is particularly concerned with arithmetic and algebraic geometry .

Life

Gillet studied at King's College in London (Bachelor 1974) and received his doctorate in 1978 under David Mumford at Harvard University ( Applications of Algebraic K-Theory to Intersection Theory ). As a post-doctoral student he was an instructor and from 1981 an assistant professor at Princeton University . From 1984 he was assistant professor, from 1986 associate professor and from 1988 professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago , where he headed the faculty of mathematics and computer science from 1996 to 2001. He was visiting scholar at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (2006), the Institute for Advanced Study (1987), the IHES (1985, 1986, 1988), in Barcelona, at the Fields Institute in Toronto and at the Isaac Newton Institute (1998) . From 1986 to 1989 he was a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ).

Gillet dealt with differential geometry , algebraic and arithmetic geometry, in particular with Arakelov theory and algebraic K theory . He worked with Christophe Soulé and Jean-Michel Bismut , among others . With Soulé in 1992 he proved an arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem .

Gillet was a Senior Fellow at the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2008 . He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyōto 1990 ( A Riemann-Roch theorem in arithmetic geometry ). From 1994 to 1999 he was editor of the American Journal of Mathematics, 1995 to 1998 the International Mathematics Research Notices and 2003 to 2007 of the Illinois Journal of Mathematics.
