Henri Grégoire (Byzantinist)

Henri Grégoire (born March 21, 1881 in Huy , † September 28, 1964 in Brussels ) was a Belgian historian . He is considered the founder of Byzantine Studies in Belgium.

Life

Henri Grégoire was Professor of Ancient and Medieval History at the French-speaking University of Brussels . In 1938 he went as a visiting professor at the New School for Social Research and as a Sather Professor at the University of California, Berkeley . During the Second World War he worked at the École libre des hautes études , where many Belgian and French emigrants worked. In 1941 he was appointed dean of the Philosophical Faculty of Cairo University, where he gave history lectures and French courses. After the war, Grégoire returned to the University of Brussels.

In addition to his own research, which spanned a variety of topics and epochs, Grégoire took an active part in international research. He translated central writings of Byzantine studies from Russian, English and German into French, was the editor of four journals ( Byzantion, Nouvelle Clio, Annuaire de l'Institut de Philologie et d'Histoire Orientales et Slaves and Flambeau ) and a founding member of the Association Internationale des Études Byzantines . He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium and a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (since 1950).
