Life

Henri III Jules de Bourbon was the son of Louis II. De Bourbon, prince de Condé and his wife Claire-Clémence de Maillé-Brézé .

From the age of three until the death of his father in 1686 he carried the title of Duke of Enghien. Henri Jules had to go into exile with him during the Fronde , but returned in 1659. Around 1663 he was a candidate for the Polish throne, but this plan failed, as did the military career his father wanted for him. After the death of his father, he mainly took care of the expansion of Chantilly Castle , the headquarters of his family.

During his life, Henri Jules was mentally ill and terrorized his family and servants. With advancing age the abnormality grew into constant mental illness ( lycanthropy ). While his father was known as Le Grand Condé (the great Condé) , he was called Condé Le Fol (the crazy Condé) . The contemporary Saint-Simon described Condé's behavior in detail.
