Henri Lammen

Henri Lammen (* 1862 in Gent , Belgium , † 1937 in Beirut , Lebanon ) was a Belgian Jesuit and orientalist .

He joined the Jesuit Order in Beirut at the age of 15 and stayed in Lebanon forever. For eight years he studied the Arabic language , Latin and Greek . His first work was an Arabic dictionary (1889). He was the editor of the Al-Bashir magazine, published in Beirut, and after many trips he became an Orientalist at the School of Oriental Studies at the Université Saint-Joseph in 1907.

He published a number of studies on the Umayyads and pre-Islamic Arabia . He wrote many articles for the first edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam and for various professional journals.

His contributions are considered very significant among historians of Islam . It is generally accepted that Lammen "... put the whole Sīra problem on a new basis" (Becker) and his contributions to the history of the Umayyads should not be underestimated.

Lammens concluded that the result of the Saqifa meeting immediately after the death of Mohammed , a conspiracy was that of Abu Bakr , Umar went out and Abu Ubaidah in Saqifa of Banu Sa'ida. They agreed to take over the caliphate and distribute power.

In his book La Syrie, Lammen created the term “ Greater Syria ” as the original border of the Patriarchate of Antioch . This term was politicized by Antun Saada for his political program.
