Henri Laborit (1991).

Henri Marie Laborit (born November 21, 1914 in Hanoi ( Vietnam ), † May 18, 1995 in Paris ) was a French military doctor , neurologist , surgeon and chemist .

Life

Laborit was a researcher at the naval base in Toulon ( southern France ) and later a professor at the University of Québec . He mainly researched the autonomic nervous system , anesthesia and carried out experiments with sedatives .

He became known as one of the discoverers of the first known psychotropic drug chlorpromazine . With a "lytic cocktail" Laborit tried to alleviate the stress that occurs during major operations. In 1949 this mixture contained procaine , curare , TEA, atropine and atosil . Since Laborit particularly noticed the importance of the antihistamine effect, he recommended further research in this direction. In December 1950, chlorpromazine was synthesized. In February 1952 Laborit published the first report on chlorpromazine as the main subject. However, since Laborit was mainly concerned with the use of chlorpromazine in surgery in mentally healthy people, its importance for the treatment of psychoses is controversial.

Laborit was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1957 , but did not receive it. For this he received the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research (also known as the "American Nobel Prize").

Laborit also discovered the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid .

Alain Resnais's 1980 film My Uncle from America (original: Mon oncle d'Amérique ) is about his theses . Laborit plays himself here and was involved in the script.
