Henri Peyre

Henri Peyre (born February 21, 1901 in Paris , † December 9, 1988 in Norwalk (Connecticut )) was an American Romance scholar and literary scholar of French origin.

life and work

Peyre studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure , as well as at the Sorbonne and passed the Agrégation in 1924. From 1925 to 1928 he taught at Bryn Mawr College , from 1928 to 1933 at Yale University . In 1931 he completed his habilitation in Paris with the two Thèses Louis Ménard, 1822-1901 (New Haven 1932) and Bibliographie critique de l'hellénisme en France, 1843-1870 (New Haven 1932). From 1933 to 1936 he taught in Cairo. From 1938 until his retirement in 1969 he was Sterling Professor of French at Yale University, from 1969 to 1980 he still taught at the City University of New York .

Peyre was chairman of the Modern Language Association in 1960. He was the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a. the Legion of Honor. In 1953 he was elected to the American Philosophical Society and in 1957 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
