history

The Norwegian politician Trond Hegna (1898-1992) asked Nordahl Grieg in 1936 to write the poem Til Ungdommen for the Norwegian student association Det Norske Studentersamfund (DNS) in Oslo . The name of the poem Til Ungdommen ( German : For the youth ) reminds of this . The whole poem relates to the Spanish Civil War that broke out in July 1936. Nordahl Grieg then worked as an anti-fascist war reporter in the Spanish Civil War in 1937 .

The Danish composer Otto (Hübertz) Mortensen (1907–1986) wrote the song version in 1952. The Norwegian chamber choir Grex Vocalis made the song known and recorded it in 1988. In 2000 Tormod Tvete Vik composed an orchestral version for the Norwegian actress and singer Herborg Kråkevik , which she used on her CD Kråkeviks Songbok together with the song version by Otto Mortensen . Herborg Kråkevik did not use stanzas 7-10 of Til Ungdommen there . The album Kråkeviks Songbok reached number 1 of the hits in Norway in the 47th week in 2000. Til Ungdommen has been a popular Norwegian song ever since.

The Danish pop musician Kim Larsen (1945-2018) used the song Til Ungdommen in his album " 231045-0637 " (1979), in his live album " Kim i Cirkus " (1985) and in the live DVD " En Lille Pose Støj "(2007). The Norwegian band The Soundbyte also uses Til Ungdommen . The song Songen Åt Fangen in the album Kraft (2004) by the Norwegian black metal band Vreid has the melody by Til Ungdommen . The Danish progressive metal band Beyond Twilight brings the instrumental piece Closing the Circle on their album The Devil's Hall of Fame (2001) , which contains fragments of Til Ungdommen's melody .

Nordahl Grieg died on December 2, 1943 in the attack on Berlin, when the Lancaster LM 316 , in which he was a war correspondent, was shot down. The crash site is in Kleinmachnow on the shores of Lake Machnower . At the request of the Norwegian embassy, the Kleinmachnow community erected a boulder there as a memorial. At the inauguration of the memorial on November 23, 2003, the Norwegian singer Torhild Ostad sang the song Til Ungdommen .

After the attacks in Norway on July 22, 2011 , the song Til Ungdommen became part of the memorial services, gatherings and funeral services for the victims of the attacks. The official celebrations came to an end on August 21, 2011 with a commemoration of the Norwegian state in Oslo's Spektrum Arena . At the end of the memorial service, the Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø sang the song Til Ungdommen . The event was broadcast on all Norwegian TV channels. Subsequently, the popular version of the actress and singer Herborg Kråkevik rose to number 1 of the hits in Norway in the 31st week of 2011 .

Poem Til Ungdommen (To the youth) by Nordahl Grieg

Til undimmed
by Nordahl Grieg (1936)
Kringsatt av fiender,
gå inn i din tid!
Under en bloody storm -
vi deg til strid!
Kanskje you spør i fear,
udekket, åpen:
hva shall be any kjempe med
hva he mitt våpen?
Her he ditt vern mot vold,
her he ditt sverd:
troen på livet vårt,
menneskets verd.
For all vår Fremdtids skyld,
so it is and it is not,
dø om du må - men:
øk det and styrk det!
Stilt går granatenes
gliding band
Stans deres drift mot død
stans dem med ånd!
Krig he forakt for liv.
Fred er å skape.
Kast dine krefter inn:
døden shall tape!
Elsk and berik med drøm
old stort som var!
Gå mot det ukjente
fravrist det svar.
Ubygde power amplifier,
ukjente stjerner.
Skap dem, med skånet livs
third hjerner!
If he nobles mennesket,
jorden er rik!
Finnes her nød and sult
skyldes det svik.
Kisses! I livets navn
should urett trap.
Solskinn and brød and ånd
eies av all.
Because synker våpnene
maktesløs ned!
Skaper vi menneskeverd
skaper vi fred.
The som med høyre arm
bærer en byrde,
dyr og awkward,
kan ikke myrde.
Dette he løftet vårt
fra bror til bror:
vi vil bli gode mot
menskenes jord.
Vi vil ta vare på
skjønnheten, varmen
som om vi bar et barn
varsomt på poor!

Surrounded by enemies -
they stand in front of the gate;
the battle is to be fought
prepare yourself!
Perhaps in fear you ask
defenseless as a child,
which your weapons
for the fights are.
Now here is the gun
Sword against violence:
Faith as a profession
Human dignity immediately.
Future of all of us,
it's your fault ':
yourself victim of your life,
be strong, be patient!
Terror and also gunfire
here in your country?
Death must not win
your spirit is your pledge.
Contempt for life
does not make peace.
Take all your strength:
death should lose.
Love and dream
alone brings you forward.
Towards the future
the answer only then.
Factories unbuilt,
Stars unknown.
Build and Explore!
already your country!
Dignity is to man
his earth rich.
Is there need and hunger
is treason like that.
In the name of life
forget the wrong!
Sun, bread and spirit
fix it.
Arms, sink down!
People are worth it
that we create peace
here on this earth!
to carry responsibility
is man's burden.
More than any animal
be this dignity to HIM!
That's why we promise
Brothers you are worth it
to handle carefully,
with the people of the earth.
Life also needs beauty
Warmth like a child -
just born -
so we all are.
