history
The Norwegian politician Trond Hegna (1898-1992) asked Nordahl Grieg in 1936 to write the poem Til Ungdommen for the Norwegian student association Det Norske Studentersamfund (DNS) in Oslo . The name of the poem Til Ungdommen ( German : For the youth ) reminds of this . The whole poem relates to the Spanish Civil War that broke out in July 1936. Nordahl Grieg then worked as an anti-fascist war reporter in the Spanish Civil War in 1937 .
The Danish composer Otto (Hübertz) Mortensen (1907–1986) wrote the song version in 1952. The Norwegian chamber choir Grex Vocalis made the song known and recorded it in 1988. In 2000 Tormod Tvete Vik composed an orchestral version for the Norwegian actress and singer Herborg Kråkevik , which she used on her CD Kråkeviks Songbok together with the song version by Otto Mortensen . Herborg Kråkevik did not use stanzas 7-10 of Til Ungdommen there . The album Kråkeviks Songbok reached number 1 of the hits in Norway in the 47th week in 2000. Til Ungdommen has been a popular Norwegian song ever since.
The Danish pop musician Kim Larsen (1945-2018) used the song Til Ungdommen in his album " 231045-0637 " (1979), in his live album " Kim i Cirkus " (1985) and in the live DVD " En Lille Pose Støj "(2007). The Norwegian band The Soundbyte also uses Til Ungdommen . The song Songen Åt Fangen in the album Kraft (2004) by the Norwegian black metal band Vreid has the melody by Til Ungdommen . The Danish progressive metal band Beyond Twilight brings the instrumental piece Closing the Circle on their album The Devil's Hall of Fame (2001) , which contains fragments of Til Ungdommen's melody .
Nordahl Grieg died on December 2, 1943 in the attack on Berlin, when the Lancaster LM 316 , in which he was a war correspondent, was shot down. The crash site is in Kleinmachnow on the shores of Lake Machnower . At the request of the Norwegian embassy, the Kleinmachnow community erected a boulder there as a memorial. At the inauguration of the memorial on November 23, 2003, the Norwegian singer Torhild Ostad sang the song Til Ungdommen .
After the attacks in Norway on July 22, 2011 , the song Til Ungdommen became part of the memorial services, gatherings and funeral services for the victims of the attacks. The official celebrations came to an end on August 21, 2011 with a commemoration of the Norwegian state in Oslo's Spektrum Arena . At the end of the memorial service, the Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebø sang the song Til Ungdommen . The event was broadcast on all Norwegian TV channels. Subsequently, the popular version of the actress and singer Herborg Kråkevik rose to number 1 of the hits in Norway in the 31st week of 2011 .
