The Machnower See , also Kleinmachnower See , is located in Kleinmachnow on the outskirts of the southwestern Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf . The lake, which is embedded in an old tree population, is part of the federal waterway Teltow Canal with a flow direction from east to west. The Berlin Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

history

Circular route on the north side in winter

For the construction of the Teltow Canal between 1901 and 1906, the valley of the Bäke river was used to a large extent , which passed Lake Machnower to the south without touching and which disappeared except for two small remnants due to the construction of the canal.

At Kleinmachnow alone, the breakthrough of the Seeberg-Weinberg ridge for the purpose of straightening the canal led to a deviation from the old Bäkelauf, so that today the canal leads through the previously isolated lake and, on the other hand, a section of the Bäke south of the lake with remains of the original Vegetation was preserved. Today the lake with its original surroundings is classified as a nature reserve .

The Norwegian war correspondent Nordahl Grieg died on December 2, 1943 during the attack on Berlin when his Lancaster LM 316 was shot down. The crash site is on the shores of Lake Machnower. At the request of the Norwegian embassy, the Kleinmachnow community erected a boulder there as a memorial. At the inauguration of the memorial on November 23, 2003, the Norwegian singer Torhild Ostad sang the song Til Ungdommen .

location

The Machnower See lies between the Friedensbrücke and the Kleinmachnow lock . The Bäketal stretches along the south side of the lake. On the north shore of the lake rises on the 62 meter high Seeberg the Hakeburg , a castle-like villa of 1908. Beautiful old houses lining sections, the park-like landscaped paths and the path around the lake.

Shape and fish population

The Machnower See has a tubular, bulbous shape and is around 700 meters long. The largest width is around 200 meters and the depth of the relatively muddy and shallow lake is four meters. Shortly after the lake exit in the east, the Friedensbrücke leads the Zehlendorfer Damm and the pedestrians across the canal. To the west, around 500 meters after the lake exit, there is the listed Kleinmachnow lock , via which the circular lake path crosses the canal. The fish population is considered to be quite good by anglers. Especially carp fish such as bream , silver bream , crucian carp , bleak and roach living in the lake.

Due to heavy rainfall, a lot of organic material was discharged into the water at the end of July 2016, with the result that the oxygen content in the water was reduced or consumed from 8 percent to 0.01 percent when decomposed by aerobic bacteria and organisms. Hundreds of dead fish have washed ashore as a result. Their removal by the fire brigade cost around 2500 euros.

Flora and fauna

At the lake there are only properties on the avenue at the Forsthaus that cannot be entered. This enables walkers to enjoy the lake from the shore. The numerous water birds are only slightly disturbed by this. On the north bank, a number of trees have fallen into the water, partly due to beaver damage, partly due to bank erosion. Ducks and herons like to use the deadwood as a seat, recently also turtles. However, the four or so specimens are not native, but abandoned animals.

Lock expansion stopped

In 2010, in protest against the planned deforestation, the endangered trees were marked.

In the course of the traffic project German Unity No. 17 from 1991, the Kleinmachnower lock was to be expanded to a length of 190 meters. As a result, numerous centuries-old trees would have been felled on the northwest shore of Lake Machnower. This expansion was prevented by protests.
