Henri Theil

Henri Theil (born October 13, 1924 in Amsterdam , † August 20, 2000 in Jacksonville (Florida) ) was a Dutch econometrician .

Theil received his academic training at the University of Amsterdam . He was the successor of Jan Tinbergen at the Erasmus University Rotterdam . He later taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Florida .

Henri Theil became known for the Theil index , a measure of entropy for indicating the uneven distribution of income and wealth, for example. In addition to the Gini coefficient , the Theil index is one of the most frequently used measures of inequality.

In 1966 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
