Henri Zislin
Henri Louis Constantin Zislin (born June 16, 1875 in Mulhouse , Alsace , † May 5, 1958 in Paris ) was an Alsatian journalist and political cartoonist .
Career and work
Henri Zislin was the son of Constantin Zislin, born in Sausheim , and his wife Louise, nee Würth. Henri Zislin trained as an industrial draftsman and worked in the textile industry. From 1903 he began his political caricatures in the magazine D'r Klapperstei , which appeared until 1905. As an autodidact, he learned the necessary artistic skills himself. In 1905 he brought out the brochure Alsace as a federal state , in which he demanded autonomy for his home region. The pamphlet was banned and Zislin received a prison term. In France he was celebrated as a hero for his commitment to freedom of the press and the idea of French Alsace and was more famous than in his homeland. Zislin published a twelve-page magazine Dur's Elsass from 1907 to 1914 . Each of the 190 editions contained ten to twelve drawings by Zislin. Zislin was imprisoned six times for his works. During the First World War he worked on war reports for the French army, which were printed for the Alsatian population. 156 front pages - mostly watercolors - of the 194 editions were drawn by Zislin. After the war he made drawings against the Alsatian autonomy movement. In Alsace, now French, he felt that the attempts at autonomy that he had supported under German administration were wrong.
With his drawings, Zislin used the clichés that were common at the time. In his drawings the poorly dressed, monocle and bearded Germans die and never the elegantly dressed French.
Rue Henri Zislin in Mühlhausen is named after him.
