Henricus Münstermann († April 23, 1537 ) was a Catholic priest and from 1498 to 1537 abbot in the Marienfeld monastery .

Life

Münstermann was born as the eldest son of Johann Münstermann and his wife Gertrud from Münster . His older brother Dietrich was later mayor of Münster.

After Münstermann had entered the Marienfeld Cistercian monastery , he initially held the office of bursary . At the end of 1498 the Marienfeld convent elected Münstermann as abbot. He received his consecration from the Münster auxiliary bishop Heinrich Schodehoet . With a term of office of 39 years, Münstermann was the longest abbot in Marienfeld. He died in old age on April 23, 1537.

In his long tenure of 39 years, he made a name for himself in expanding the monastery. This is how JB Nordhoff wrote in 1886. No abbot has left the stamp of art on Marienfeld as persistently as Abbot Heinrich Münstermann . The new construction of the abbey and kitchen as well as two refectories go back to him. He also had silver vessels and spoons and an abbot's staff made. The chapter house was given a new color scheme with sayings and the vaults of the church were painted. The glass paintings were also renewed.

Inside the abbey church, he had a St. Anna altar made. Probably the most drastic change was the drawing in of the choir screens and the rood screen . The latter was crowned with apostles by Evert van Roden . After the Anabaptist period , Abbot Münstermann gave some paraments to restore the cathedral inventory in Münster. The crucifixion group in the cemetery, which was created between 1520 and 1530, also fell during the time of the abbot. There is also a depiction of Mary with the baby Jesus above the north entrance of the church and the lamentation of Christ on the abbot altar.
