Evert van Roden was a sculptor of the late gothic from Munster .

Art history led him to the attribution of his works under the emergency name Meister des Johannisaltar . Reinhard Karrenbrock was the first to show in his dissertation in 1987 that the masters of the Johanniskirche in Osnabrück and Evert van Roden are identical. Evert van Roden worked in stone, but also in oak.

Life

Only a few life dates of Evert van Roden are attested, for the first time in a document from 1487 together with the Münster painter Johann von Soest . He was also known under the emergency name Meister von Liesborn , created the Brömsen altar in Lübeck's Jakobikirche and furnished it with his paintings. Evert van Roden was a contemporary of the sculptor Heinrich Brabender (* around 1475, † around 1537) in Münster , who was referred to by art history as the master of the entry of Christ into the first decade of the 20th century . Evert van Roden was probably older than Brabender, with whom he also worked. Heinrich Brabender's son Johann Brabender († 1561/1562), whose work is already influenced by the Renaissance , was probably trained in Evert van Roden's large workshop . This workshop is documented in Münster between 1485 and 1517.

Works

Evert van Roden's earliest work is in the Erphokapelle the Mauritz Church in Munster. It is the epitaph of the dean Johann Belholt († 1489). His main work has been preserved in Osnabrück , where, unlike in his home town of Münster, there was no destruction by the Anabaptist Empire . The Passion Altar (around 1512) with scenes of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ, who gave van Roden his emergency name, is in the former collegiate church of St. Johann . The side wings, which were probably painted, were lost in the Thirty Years War . About eight years later the Great Crucifixion Group was created in the small neighboring church. The figures of the apostles from around 1525 have been preserved in the Osnabrück Cathedral of St. Peter , which are located on eight pillars of the central nave. The crucifixion group from the late period of his work also goes back to Evert van Roden , which was located in the immediately adjacent grammar school church until 1990 and was moved to the Herz-Jesu-Kirche on Herrenteichswall. A cast was attached to the grammar school church.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Calvary from 1490 from the Catholic parish church in Füchtorf comes from him . It was thought to be lost for more than a hundred years and was only passed down in one photo. It turned out that it was preserved and is in the possession of the diocese of Münster .

Another work by Evert van Roden is a Madonna in the Katharinenkirche of the Bentheim castle complex near Rheine . A stone Lamentation of Mary (around 1520) can be found in Steinfurt in the collegiate chapel, an extension of the parish church of St. Nicomedes. In the church of the former Cistercian monastery in Marienfeld , the furnishings of the rood screen , which was built around 1520/25, have been preserved in the original location . These include 12 apostles and the cross altar, one of the two side altars. The second side altar, dedicated to St. Anthony, is now in the LWL State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster.

The Philippus-Jakobus altarpiece from Paderborn Cathedral (around 1515) by Evert van Roden and Heinrich Brabender is part of the holdings of the LWL State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster, as well as fragments of the Calvary from Münster Cathedral. Calvaries from his workshop, which were created around 1500, are also located in Langenberg near Wiedenbrück , Warburg and Horstmar , and from the period between 1520 and 1525 in the provost church in Werl .

In Bremen's St. Petri Cathedral there is the organ player with the reliefs of St. Willehad , the city's first bishop, and Charlemagne .

The crucifixion altar of the Brömsenkapelle in the Jakobikirche has been preserved in Lübeck . Evert van Roden created it between 1488 and 1500. His stone sculpture is “undoubtedly the most subtle stone sculpture of the late Gothic (...) [whose] exquisite delicacy and elegance (...) [may] have prompted the Lübeck mayor to undertake this commission to award Bernt Notke to Westphalia despite the competition ”.

Evert van Roden's work also became a model for contemporary artists. The cross altar in the St. Walburga Church in Meschede is a replica of the crucifixion retable that was made around 1525 in Evert van Roden's workshop for the former Marienfeld monastery church. The three-winged neo-Gothic relief altar made of sandstone was created around 1911 by the sculptor Anton Mormann from Wiedenbrück.

Awards

A street in Marienfeld is named after van Roden, as van Roden was the master of the rood screen in the monastery church there.
