Henrique Lopes de Mendonça ( pronounced Mendonssa ) (born February 12, 1856 in Lisbon , † August 24, 1931 ) was a Portuguese poet , playwright and naval officer. He is known for writing the text of the later Portuguese national anthem A Portuguesa , composed by his friend Alfredo Keil .
He was married to the daughter of the painter Manuel Bordalo Pinheiro and had three children.
