Henry William Clothier (born April 3, 1872 in London , † March 11, 1938 in Auckland , New Zealand ) was an English heavy current engineer and inventor .

After training at J. & H. Gywnne Ltd. in Hammersmith he went to Ferranti Ltd. in 1894 , where he was entrusted with the development of switchgear . After a fire broke out in a switchgear at Temple Back Station in Bristol at Christmas 1903 , he was tasked with looking for the cause.

As a result, he developed metal-clad switch cabinets to protect against live conductors and worked out valid principles for the safety of switchgear systems.

In February 1904, probably as a result of this fire, he moved from Ferranti to the small company Walker & Hodgetts Ltd. in Salford , which was liquidated in November. In early 1905 he went to Tyneside , where he supported Charles Hesterman Merz and Bernard Price in their development of the Merz-Pice protective gear . In 1906 he moved to A. Reyrolle & Company there .
