Henry Ehlers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Ehlers (* 1897 in Aachen ; † 1988 ) was a German graphic artist who lived and worked in Munich .

Life

Ehlers created advertising posters for a number of companies such as BMW , Rotti Soupenwürze, Erdinger Weissbier or the men's fashion house Hansen & Co in Cologne. From 1928 to 1938 he worked as an in-house graphic designer for the Jewish textile retail company Bamberger & Hertz with locations in Leipzig, Cologne, Frankfurt / Main, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart and Munich, for which he designed the dark, mysterious leitmotif wearing a hat and long coat: " the friendly gentleman ”, the corporate group's logo.

Henry Ehlers' graphic style is unique in German-speaking countries: its forms are strictly geometrically structured, characterized by Art Deco . These strict compositions are combined with sometimes absurd, almost Dadaist advertising messages. The posters for Bamberger & Hertz are particularly haunting.

His advertising graphics are traded as works of art. One of his posters is part of the permanent exhibition at MoMA New York.
