Henry Herbert, 7th Earl of Carnarvon
Henry George Reginald Molyneux Herbert, 7th Earl of Carnarvon , KCVO (born January 19, 1924 in Highclere Castle , Hampshire , † September 10, 2001 in Winchester , Hampshire) was the manager of Queen Elizabeth II's racehorses since 1969.
family
The Earl was the only son of Henry Herbert, 6th Earl of Carnarvon , with his first (American) wife Anne Wendell.
Like his father, Herbert (then known by his courtesy title of Lord Porchester ) fell in love with an Anglo-American , Jean Margaret Wallop of Big Horn , Wyoming . The Wallop family also belonged to the English nobility from southeast England. They married on January 7, 1956.
The Earl and Countess of Carnarvon had three children:
- George, later the 8th Earl of Carnarvon
- Hon. Harry Herbert
- Lady Carolyn Herbert
Career
Herbert served as a lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards and later became Honorary Colonel of the 116th (Hampshire Fortress) Engineer Regiment (Territorial Army).
Lord Carnarvon was best known as a lifelong personal friend of Queen Elizabeth II and as manager of her horse stables. The Queen called him "Porchie" after his former courtesy title that he used before his father's death. After his death, his son-in-law, John Warren, took over management.
Herbert was an independent member of Hampshire County Council (he later joined the Tory faction) and became its chairman. He was also the chairman of the South East Economic Planning Council .
In 1982 he was named Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO). He died in 2001 at the age of 77.
