Henry Kloss (born 1929 in Altoona , Pennsylvania , USA ; † January 31, 2002 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) was an American designer .

Life

Henry Kloss studied at MIT and in 1952 co-founded the Acoustic Research Corporation (AR), where he developed the AR Model 1 , a compact loudspeaker with a large bass. The AR Model 1 was the first speaker with a bass surround. This allows the membrane significantly more travel and thus powerful bass despite its compact design. Today almost every loudspeaker is based on this technology. In the early 1960s, he and business partners founded the KLH company , where he developed the Model 8 , a sharp, good-sounding table radio.

In 1971 Henry Kloss introduced the world's first cassette deck with Dolby noise reduction, the Advent 201 , and thus transformed the compact cassette from a dictation medium into a music carrier.

Always on the lookout for good sound, Kloss was a pioneer of all-round sound and home cinema. For this achievement he received an Emmy in 1997 . In addition to numerous other honors, he was also elected to the Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame.
