Henry Léauté

Henry Charles Victor Jacob Léauté (born April 26, 1847 in Belize , then British Honduras, † November 5, 1916 in Paris ) was a French engineer and mathematician.

He studied from 1866 at the École polytechnique in Paris. Léauté was professor of mechanics at the École polytechnique from 1895 to 1904. He took part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 (Battle of Champigny) and was sentenced to death by the Commune for refusing to accept public office among the Communards. But he managed to escape to Toulouse .

He dealt with regulation and remote control of machines. In 1880 he received the Poncelet Prize . In 1890 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences .

He was the father of André Léauté (1882–1966), professor of physics at the École polytechnique.
