Henry Pancoast

Henry Khunrath Pancoast (born February 26, 1875 in Philadelphia , † May 20, 1939 in Merion , Pennsylvania ) was an American radiologist .

Life

The son of a doctor graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1898 with a medical degree . In the following years he worked as an anesthetist at the university hospital. In 1902 he succeeded Charles Lester Leonard (1861-1913) as head of the X-ray department there. In 1911, Pancoast became the first professor of radiology in the United States. In 1939 Eugene Pendergrass succeeded him in this position.

Services

Pancoast dealt v. a. with radiation therapy , the visualization of the gastrointestinal tract and the use of X-rays in occupational medicine , especially with regard to pneumoconiosis and silicosis in miners.

Under Pancoast's direction, the university clinic's radiology department was expanded and training systematically improved.

In 1932, Pancoast described a form of lung cancer , the Pancoast tumor .
